Calculators and Flight Computers

Examination Requirements DGCA India

(i) Navigation Computers and Scientific Calculators without multiple-memory for Air Navigation & Composite (like PPLG, CPLCG and ATPCG)
(ii) Only Scientific Calculators without multiple-memory for Radio Aids and Instruments (ATPL) and performance papers. However, exchange of these devices amongst the candidates shall not be permitted

What is a Navigation Computer ?

A Navigation Computer is a device - electronic or mechanical - that simplifies navigation calculations related to Altitude, Wind Triangle, etc. There are electronic ones and the mechanical ones

Both of these do the same functions. The mechanical one is cheaper but needs some practice to get it going.

What functionalities are required in the Scientific Calculators ?

Apart from being non programmable and without multiple memory your scientific calculator must have following functions:-
1. Unit Conversion
2. Degrees Min Sec Function
3. Basic Trigonometric functions.
4. Arithmetic Functions

What can you Use ?

You can use any of these. You will anyway need a scientific calculator for ATPL Radio aids and Instruments exam. You can also use a combination of a mechanical flight computer with a scientific calculator. Your choice depends wholly on your budget because after the exams you will rarely use it for flying in modern aeroplanes. Following are the possible combinations :-
